This was recommended by our hospice unit when my mom was dying. I will be forever grateful they did, because even though it was about a subject that seems sad & morbid, it gave me great hope, happiness & comfort! The stories are short & are so different from each other! I have gotten many of these copies for friends & family & encourage everyone to read this wonderful book!

Permission to Die
This book was written by 2 hospice nurses. It's important to give the loved one 'permission to die'. They also address the various reactions to dying: anger, denial, acceptance, bargaining, depression. And they provide some signs when death is close. This book helps the caregiver be a better caregiver. I highly recommend it.

VERY VERY SPECIAL
I wish I had had this BEFORE my sister died. But reading it in the weeks afterward explained SO many things I didn't understand or appreciate. If you have a loved one who is approaching death, I think this should be required reading. It's written with great insight, consummate skill, and heartwarming compassion. It completely changed my view on the dying process. I think this book should be available at every nursing home in the world.

Supporting the dying
I wish I had found this book sooner, Going through the end stage of a loved one's life is so difficult. The information found here, based on years of experience by the authors with patients who have gone through hospice care is enlightening and useful. What do you say? How might you bring up topics you would like to discuss when you don't know how to begin? How can you try to resolve old conflicts or unfinished business with your dying loved one? How can you stay positive about medical treatments, yet allow your loved one to know you are supportive of the endstage process s/he is obviously progessing through? Knowing what to expect and how to respond makes the dying person and the loved ones more comfortable sharing the time that is left to them. Highly recommended! My family has been passing copies around for months-we have all benefitted from the insights.
