A brilliant and unsettling play from one of the UK's leading dramatists. At the opening of the play, a young girl is questioning her aunt about having seen her uncle hitting people with an iron bar; by the end, several years later, the whole world is at war - including birds and animals. An extraordinary dramatic work that defies the theater's expectatios--moving the audience to the point of boredom, in some directors' interpretations--this play is a moving and compelling look at human nature and torture and war. Churchill gets at existential questions regarding the worth of human life, but manages to do so eleoquntly, without being trite, and with interesting character development in play that doesn't let the characters become too real or emotionally close to the audience. Better performed than read (of course), an excellent contemporary playwright.
