7 January 1990: An elderly couple, Maria and Johannes Lovgren, are discovered after being viciously attacked in their farmhouse in Lunnarp, Sweden.
He has been brutally bludgeoned to death. She's found bloodied, tied to a chair with a noose around her neck, barely clinging to life.
Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander is assigned to the case. He has problems. His life is a mess. His wife left him three months ago and has filed for divorce. His relationship with his daughter is estranged.. He's overweight and has a drinking problem. He is weary, depressed, and lonely.
But he's one hell of a detective.
This case will give him something to focus on other than his troubles.
And focus he does. To the point of obsession.
Right before Maria passes away in the hospital, she utters the word, "foreign".
This will not bode well for the investigation. There is a growing movement of anti-immigrant sentiments in Sweden. There are camps scattered across the area for refugees and asylum seekers.
If word gets out that foreigners committed these horrific murders, violence could rear its ugly head.
Eventually it does and what is already a difficult case becomes even more complex and dangerous.
Wallander and his team must sift through multiple suspects, leads, motives and dark secrets.
The turn the story takes near the end comes as a complete surprise.
This is an outstanding police procedural. Atmospheric and intense with depth and suspense.
An intelligent thriller that is also a contemplation on Swedish society at the time.
This is my first trip into the world of Kurt Wallander. It will not be my last. I will seek out the other eleven stories and devour them.

Faceless Killers: A Wallander Mystery
I enjoyed this book, not only because of the mystery aspect but also for the glimpse of contemporary Swedish society it affords. Wallander, a detective on the Ystad Police force, is an interesting character in that he has problems like all of us, problems that sometimes overwhelm him but yet he keeps striving; both in life and in his police work. I would recommend this book to all mystery fans.

A Knot & the Word "Foreign" Keep Wallander Moving
The excellent "Faceless Killers" is the first novel Mankell writes in the Wallander series, but read "The Pyramid" first. "The Pryramid" is a prequel collection of short stories and a novel that immediately precedes the first call to the police that opens "Faceless Killers."
Mankell writes in a compelling manner that provides a framework to understand the social and humanitarian changes that take place not just in Sweden, but in western Europe and the U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s. In his storytelling we do not lose sight of the plot or the characters. The translation, at least in the New Press edition, allows Mankell's work to speak directly to English speakers.
Read; for the story and compelling characters. The insight you may gain from looking back at that time becomes the bonus track.
