Should the brushes not make good contact they must be trimmed. If they are of leaf copper or copper gauze they must be filed to fit: a jig is usually provided to make this easier. If they are of carbon they can be filed roughly to shape and then cut down with sandpaper. This is done by clamping the brushes in place in the holders and running a strip of sandpaper, about No. 1, between the commutator and the brushes: the sand side of course being next the brushes and the paper made to conform closely to the shape of the commutator. Start the machine with all the resistance in the field regulator and with the external circuit open. When up to speed adjust the field regulator until the voltmeter indicates normal voltage. Shift the brush rocker arm until the voltmeter gives its highest reading. If the brushes are set just ahead of this point in the direction of the rotation and are properly trimmed, they should run without sparking. Readjust the voltage to its proper value. With the rheostat in the external circuit all in, or with only a few lamps on, close the main switch. If everything is all right increase the load up to full load. Should the brushes now tend to spark, the trouble may be remedied by shifting them a little further forward. Under no circumstances should the brushes be allowed to spark or flash. What is the general effect on the voltage of a change of speed? Of change of current in the fields? On current when the load changes? When the speed changes? Take speed at no load and at full load and see how nearly the machine runs ...
