When I went online to Aibris to order "Standing at the Scratch Line", to my surprise I saw that there was a sequel, "Echoes of a Distant Summer" which was released in 2002. I ordered both books and started to read "Echoes". "Echoes" started in the 1950's and ended in 1982 and was about King Tremain's grandson, Jackson St. Clair Tremain. In the first book you got to meet King Tremain's wife and Jackson's hated grandmother Serena. In the first book, King married Serena and it looked like a match made in heaven, they seem to be perfect for each other. King loved her, when she found out that he had fathered a child by another woman, she took steps to keep it from King resulting in his first son falling into the arms of his enemies and sent to an orphanage. Because of this, a curse was put on King and Serena's children. That curse became more evident in the second book. King and Serena stayed married but their marriage was filled with hatred, sorrow and pain. In "Echoes" you get to meet the grandson and it tells how King's son, Jack and Serena's son, LaValle were both murdered showing that the curse that Serena caused was still in place. As Johnson wrote the second book, the grandson, Jackson, hated his grandfather, King, and wanted nothing to do with him and hated his grandmother as much as she hated him and had not spoken or saw her in over ten years, but when his grandfather became ill and was possibly dieing, Serena called him to tell him that his grandfather wanted to talk with him about the family business since everything would be left to Jackson, being his only true heir. I absolutely hated the character of Serena for what she did to her whole family. Serena was "light skinned" and could not bear to have anything to do with dark skinned black people, "The Willie Lynch Manifesto" at work in her. "The sins of the father is passed on to the son", really goes on and on in this book, the first book began in the late 1800's with fueding between two famlies, the DuMonts and the Tremains, at the end of "Echoes" they are still fueding and it started over 100 years ago. There has to be a book three. I want to say more, believe me, I can't say enough good praises about this book but I don't want to give away too much. This would make a great "book club" book. To Guy Johnson, Please, please, please with sugar on top, write book three or if you already have written, please have it released soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
