Métaboles is a study of continual organic changes found in nature and represented in music by evolving sections for woodwinds, strings, brass, and percussion, which culminate in a final virtuosic section for the whole orchestra. L'Arbre des songes (Tree of Dreams), Dutilleux's violin concerto, featuring violinist Augustin Hadelich, is a four-movement work connected by three interludes, and the metamorphosis of themes between the soloist and the ensemble is a prominent feature.
