For a relaxing album of quiet classics, Denon's Dreams: Classical Music for a Good Night's Sleep succeeds fairly well, since all of its pieces are quite soft and slow, suggesting mellow, nocturnal moods. Even so, some listeners may be rudely awakened by noting the brevity of this budget disc, which only runs 55 minutes, hardly a generous offering; others may be put off by the slight but noticeable variability of the volume, which is due to the different ensembles, venues, and recording dates. The sound may be all right when played as background music at a moderate level, but it changes often enough to be inappropriate for nap time. Still, the representation of composers is good, with an emphasis on shimmering impressionistic music by Claude Debussy and pieces by J.S. Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, Max Bruch, Johannes Brahms, and Camille Saint-Saëns give a reasonable sampling of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic masters.
