Morgan, who founded the first medical school in American and, fighting beside Washington, was ruined b the petty politics of the Revolution; McDowell, who, although on the fringe of the wilderness, dared the operation that prepared the way for all abdominal surgery; Rush, the equivocal personality who, for better or worse, dominated American medicine for more than fifty years; Beaumont, who, saving a life, won a living laboratory; Drake, who brought modern medicine to the New West; Long and Morton, who banished pain from surgery and earned it for themselves - these men are honored in their profession today.

Dr. Flexner gives a unique look at medicine in rural America in the early 20th century, when doctors actually made house calls and delivered babies at home. Riding a lonely circuit and sometimes not being paid, doctors on horseback did incredible things for common people under unusual circumstances. The narrative style was easy to read and it was enjoyable and interesting story. My copy contained an inscription in the frontice piece in which a grateful parient gave her doctor the book in gratitude for his faithful service. Flexner's book will be passed on to my son who also a doctor and has a collection of early medical books and journals.
