Steve Martin's character in this film is like a bad penny, you can't get rid of it. He finagles his way to becoming the student of a master confidence scam artist (Caine). If they were an old fashioned comedy duo, Martin would be the all the Stooges rolled into Jerry Lewis to Caine's Dean Martin. A pretty American enters the rivalry between master and student and the tale continues. The locations, sets and atmosphere are what one would expect from a Riviera setting. I liked the train scenes but then I'm loco for locomotives. The supporting cast does fine, All in all (what's that mean anyway?) this is an amusing and enjoyable way to spend a few hours. This is a well directed effort away from the puppets for Frank Oz.
The DVD bonus encompasses a behind the scenes 'interview' with the major players. There is looped running commentary by the Director Frank Oz that can be turned on..
