There is something of the universal in these 1850s letters between two Mormon women. There is romance in their memories of bygone days involving courtship and marriage, children and friends. But there is also much to learn about hardship in their candid exchanges.Ellen Spencer Clawson and Ellen Pratt McGary were childhood friends in Illinois. They crossed the Great Plains together and spent two years in Salt Lake City before they separated. The former married Hiram B. Clawson, a young man marked by destiny to become Brigham Young's personal business manager, a leading merchant, bishop, diplomat, and missionary. The later accompanied her father and mother on a mission to the Society Islands, then settled in San Bernardino, California, and finally in Beaver, Utah.Their correspondence reveals fascinating aspects of life in the Mormon capital as well as in the outposts. They illustrate two patterns of family life -- the urban family of four wives and forty-two children, and the monogamous, colonizing family. Neither woman found life easy. One had the comforts and social position of an upscale setting; the other enjoyed the attention of a single husband and love in a cottage. Their lives are documented in footnote excerpts from their diaries and other records to give a complete glimpse of a frontier woman.
