Jan Marsh has accomplished a rare feat in art-literary bio culture these days: a book that reads well. Now days all nonfiction books have to be writtten by academics. These folks are knowledgeable but cannot string a narrative to save their lives. Jan is the rare exception. If you wish to have a scholarly grasp on this subject, read this tome. It is very readable.
