These four works, written between 1925 and 1948, are firmly in the composer's immediately recognizable populist vein of Americana: jazzy, loose-limbed, evocative, and spacious. Music for the Theatre, one of his first pieces to incorporate elements of jazz, was considered radically avant-garde at the time of its premiere in 1925, but from the perspective of the twenty-first century, its mild bluesiness is appealing, but hardly provocative. Quiet City is one of Copland's most popular works, a gently atmospheric tone poem with prominent solos for trumpet and English horn.
