Excerpt from Christian Doctrine and Morals Viewed in Their Connexion: Being the Twenty-Fourth Fernley Lecture, Delivered in Carrs Lane Chapel, Birmingham, July 27, 1894 Controversies, indeed, of the gravest moment are now prevalent respecting the foundations and the nature of morality; and these controversies are perhaps pregnant with deeper consequences to the practical observance and determination of moral conduct than is generally recognized. If the theory of Utilitarianism were victorious, it has already been made evident by the speculations of some of its advocates that it would not leave Christian practice untouched. But at all events, the supreme necessity, and, in some cases, the supreme obligation, of the more conspicuous principles of Christian morality is fully admitted by all the writers with whom we have practically to deal. It is, indeed, more than admitted; it is erected into the one sole pillar of the new edifice they would establish. Their chief position is that it is really the sum and substance of Christianity itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
