For elegance of conception, clarity of technique, and purity of expression, Engerer's playing can scarcely be surpassed, only matched. Because the nocturnes rely so strongly on their sinuous, unfolding melodies, a performer's ability to make them float above the accompaniment is critical. Engerer sustains the effect of bel canto vocalization as she executes all the ornaments with the nuances of a sung line, and suspends the melodies with careful use of rubato, phrasing, and dynamics. The overall feeling of her playing is smooth and balanced, and there is never a moment where one note is overemphasized or where her touch seems forced.
