Experience in South Africa is proving to-day how rapidly trust may make friends out of conquered foes. The time may have come for a new attempt to tell the story of Sumner's life and to appraise his service. Unfortunately the second volume of The Letters and Journals of Samuel Gridley Howe and The Diary of Gideon Welles were not available until most of this book was in type.
