Each of the two works recorded here by the Sinfonieorchester Basel under conductor Ariane Matiakh seems to have been recorded only once before. They are major finds, and it has been no surprise to see this album ascend classical best-seller charts. The Seven Stars of the main attraction are not celestial bodies but movie stars: Douglas Fairbanks, Lilian Harvey, Greta Garbo, Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, Emil Jannings, and a rather manic Charlie Chaplin who, at times, slows down into sentimentality. Each one is sharply characterized (sample the perky "It Girl" of silent cinema or the chilly Garbo), and to add another level, Koechlin structures some of them as variations on themes defined by letters in a figure's name. The work is a natural for performance with any kind of film event, and it is easily accessible for anyone. The final Vers la voûte étoilée...
