A former infantry office, who took part in this encounter relates its agonizing history, from the highest level down to the actions of individual soldiers, including the disagreements between British and American commanders and the crucial impact of Italy's geography.

Excellent account of Cassino by an officer who was
This book, written by a British office who served at Cassino, it is told in an engaging way by an author with great powers of description. Majdalany brings a powerful analytical insight for military strategy and tactics, to bear on the events of Cassino and to convey the significance of this to the layman in an understandable way.
Cassino: Portrait of a Battle was first published in 1957, 13 years after the events on the battlefield. Long enough to get a wider historical perspective, but close enough to retain the detail.
"Cassino" is written through the eyes of the combattants on the ground; often on both sides. It also shines a spotlight on the hugh egos and wanton recklessness of a few of the generals, prepared to waste troops lives for an opportunity for their own personal agrandisement.
