This is the second disc of Buxtehude harpsichord music from Danish keyboardist Lars Ulrik Mortensen, originally recorded for Dacapo in 1998. It's a rather motley group, not uniformly compelling but with flashes of Buxtehude's iconoclastic brilliance. The "More Palatino" and "Courant Zimble" cryptically referred to on the cover are variation sets. The former has a rather scholastic feel despite what is said to be a drinking-song theme, but the courant set (whoever or whatever Zimble may have been) is a nifty group of eight variations (there is not a track designated as the theme, although the first one has the characteristic courant rhythm) that are each rhythmically uniform, giving the impression of viewing the basic material through different lenses.
