Anyone with a little history of St. Paul remembers stories of Charley Ward and The Brown and Bigelow company. Charley was the President of B& B after Bigelow drowned in fishing accident. He met Bigelow in prison where both were serving time. He helped Bigelow deal with the other prisoners and when Charley got out of prison he came to Bigelow for a job. He didn't get a cushy job however. He proved his worth and rose up the ranks to be Bigelow's assistant. After Biogelow's death the board of directors picked Ward to lead the company. Leo McCall worked for Ward and enjoyed hearing the other employees tell stories about Ward antics. The stories always ended with someone should write a book about Charley Ward. Leo is now an 81-year-old widower. He has turned the stories he heard about Ward into a thinly veiled biography with Harry Hall (Ward) leading a St. Paul glue company and his salesman with crazy enthusiasm. Hence the name of the book Business Is Baloney. This book will get you laughing on every page. McCall tells the story using aliases for other local businessman of that day. Most of what I have in the book is what happened in Ward's leadership. Everyone I write about is dead now but I still don't want to be used, said McCall. The book is available at Mitch's Supper Club on West Seventh, Kowalski's food markets in St. Paul and Woodbury and the University of St. Thomas bookstore. I published it myself and I have had to go into a second printing cause the first sold out. McCall was active in the St. Patrick's Association and used to be one of the judges for the Miss Shamrock contest until the late 80's. As a senior at St. Thomas he won a school wide debate contest against twoother students who went on to high acclaim in their respective fields. They were James Shannon later Bishop Shannon and Bob Short, active political figure and well known sports team owner and businessman. McCall has other books in the offering that we can look forward to reading and if they are half as good as Business Is Baloney we can all be happy. If you can't find the book at your local bookstore call Leo and he will sell you a copy for only $10 and that includes the autograph.
