In the last two decades, Africa has witnessed complex, but dynamic political struggles aimed at evolving a new culture of politics and norms of political governance. This largely variegated and contradictory process has seen dominant orthodoxy under attack, entrenched political habits give way, old barriers gradually deconstructed and new hopes emerge. Interrogating Africa's current strides towards democracy and good governance, this book also examines the interposition of the civil society which occurred in this process. It also raises critical issues at the level of theory and practice. It identifies and delineates the phases of those processes and examines key theoretical and methodological issues of the governance project. Neglected issues such as gender, pastoralism, ethnicity, constitutionalism, local governance, the economy, and the African Union are also analyzed within the governance discourse. Six countries are reviewed as case studies in this book. These countries include Botswana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, and Ethiopia. In all, this book offers a rigorous, comparative, and holistic approach to the issue of democracy and good governance in Africa.
