In the 1972 performance of Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in E minor, the playing is bold, muscular, and exciting, and Haitink builds great momentum with his movendo pacing. From the opening measures of the Allegro non troppo to the closing bars of the finale's monumental passacaglia, Haitink keeps the work's trajectory clearly in mind and never lets the tension flag. The Variations on a Theme by Haydn is a fine complement to the symphony, relaxed and genial in contrast to the previous work's dynamic thrust and seriousness. The brass and woodwinds are especially warm here, and the Royal Concertgebouw as a whole is wonderful in the glorious perorations of the final variation. Haitink's performances of three Hungarian Dances fill out the album, perhaps superfluously...
