Follows the voyages of convicts sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Norfolk Island, and Van Diemen's Land. Considers the consequences-intended and unintended-of transportation and brings out the real dimensions of a system in which, for example, only one convict was formally executed on a convict ship though hundreds died through shipwreck, disease and violence; 13000 children werre transported to Van Diemens Land; and many convicts had their first access to education and medical help on the convict ships.
