On a clear autumn day local kennel owner John Cunningham sets out on the season's first shoot. Joining him is Ben Garnet, a corrupt local official who causes strife when he engineers an "accidental" mating between one of his spaniels and John's champion dog. The offspring would bear the coveted bloodlines of both dogs--but an irate Cunningham refuses to sigh the necessary papers. When a half-dead Garnet turns up on the roadside, Cunningham finds himself a suspect.

Breeding game-dogs can bring the owner of a kennel not only income, but headaches as well, as John Cunningham, Falklands war veteran, learns in "Bloodlines". The problem begins when he refuses to give in to the demand of the man he despises, the crafty, deceitful Ben Garnet, who had cheated him, while stealing a valuable service. There are pups without pedigree, with champion bloodlines in them, and unknown person, who is ready to harm humans or dogs to get the document that increases the value of the pups. There are threats from an unidentified individual. John has a good reason to try and find out who is involved. Beth, his wife, helps him, using all her considerable wit. The readers take part in the country life, they go hunting with John, watch him train his dogs in all the weathers. Gerald Hammond, himself hunter and dog lover, describes the scottish countryside in such a way that the readers feel as if they were there. Lively dialogues, often with a touch of humor, interesting characters, and thrilling intrigue make reading of this book fun, which is true of each book from "John Cunningham" series I have read. The first title of the series is "The Dog in the Dark", where you learn how John founded his kennel.
