A solid craftsman at work among a small group of Nashville superpickers, Hank Snow comes up with a program here that might be somewhat misunderstood from the album title of Big Country Hits. But it's easily explained by the album's humorous subtitle, "Songs I Hadn't Recorded Till Now" -- naturally, because these are songs that were hits for other country artists, only a few of which have retained hit status over the nearly half a century that has ensued. While "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" and "Mansion on the Hill" were still a solid part of the country repertoire in the new millennium, many of these other titles might come across more like unexpected discoveries, the valuable and often neglected work of '50s country songwriters such as Leon Payne and Don Gibson. The latter artist's "A Legend in My Time" confirms country music's status as the genre most likely to allow artists the opportunity to denigrate themselves in public. Snow might be a trifle soft around the edges for the outlaw country crowd, but he is the real deal and is in good form here, although there is a trifle of a hankering on his end to get back to his own material.
