The Symphonie Fantastique is one of Fischer's fortes; conducted without a score, it seems to unfold here in a single gesture. The idée fixe somehow seems surprising each time it appears, and the famed "March to the Scaffold" carries you through as a single narrative utterance without being overdone as it so often is. Equally enjoyable are the three short works that conclude the program, neglected because they tend not to fit modern symphonic programs. Two involve choruses, one a double women's choir (in which the women of the University of Utah Chamber Choir acquit themselves splendidly).
