It features strong solo singing by an array of better than average English soloists with mezzo-soprano Jean Rigby as warm-toned Marie, baritone Gerald Finley as a big-hearted Joseph, and Alastair Miles as a dark-souled Hérode. Though better known as a choral director in superb recordings of motets by Bach, Brahms, and Bruckner, Best turns in capable and energetic leadership, and he clearly enjoys leading the music. The Corydon chorus is impeccable; the Corydon orchestra is professional with lovely solos by harpist Skaila Kanga; and Hyperion's digital sound is clear, cool, and detailed. If this were the only recording of the work available, L'Enfance du Christ would be well represented.
