For two or three days he felt as if he should go mad: he could not work, he could not sleep at night. Not a word of consolation could he utter to his poor wife, who seemed stunned by this sudden blow. Indeed she had to try her best to console him, though her own heart was breaking. "Dear little soul, he is happier now than ever we could make him, Ben!" she said a day or two after his death, as they stood together beside his little coffin. "It sometimes struck me that he wasn't fit for this rough world, --the frailest and most tender-hearted of all our boys." "The best, the dearest!" exclaimed Ben. "We could have spared either of the others better, Maria." "We dare not _say that, Ben," answered his wife in soft, kind tones, as she clasped her hands round her husband's arm, and leant against him. This great sorrow seemed to wake up their old, tender affection for each other, which somehow during the past few years had almost died out. "We dare not say that," she repeated; "for if either of the others had been taken, we should have said, Why was the bonnie one cut off, and our frail little Johnny left to fight the hard battle of life?
