What Ehnes and pianist Andrew Armstrong bring to these pieces is not an overarching approach but a sensitivity to the particular qualities of these works, which arose during a period in which Beethoven was completely rethinking an existing genre. As in their fine recording of the Op. 12 sonatas, Ehnes and Armstrong do not strain to eliminate the traces of the "sonata for piano and violin," as Beethoven still called these works. When the violin has a less significant part, Ehnes does not exaggerate it.
