Little, however, has prepared listeners for this final volume, for most of Beethoven's violin-and-piano sonatas are early works. They were done delicately and perceptively, but here, Zimmermann and Helmchen shift gears completely for the centerpiece of this group, the Violin Sonata No. 9 in A minor, Op. 47 ("Kreutzer"). Theirs is among the most genuinely symphonic readings out there. Zimmermann gets the virtuosity that pushed two of the great violinists of Beethoven's day to their technical limits, but much of the credit for the performance's urgency and dimensions goes to Helmchen; overall, the understanding between the two performers in these complex works is impressive.
