Conductor Jonathan Cohen sculpts an unusually variegated performance of a work that, whether in traditional big-choir readings or severe one-voice-per-part versions, does not always have its separate parts distinguished sufficiently from one another. They really should be, for the music mostly came from other compositions. Here, each movement is thought through on its own. Although Arcangelo has adopted the one-voice-per-part method in the past, here Cohen uses a choir of 16, which emerges as an extremely flexible instrument in his hands.
