Even more so than usual with the mighty but protean Bach, how you perform this work depends on how you think about it. Some consider it the apex of Bach's choral music, while for others it's merely a pastiche of preexisting Bach pieces and may not even have been intended as an integral work. This recording, the first of two made by Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Ghent, was recorded in 1988 and appeared the following year. Its reissue in 2010 at a budget price (as low as U.S. $7.99) may make it the version of choice for a sheer cost/benefit consideration.
