Suzuki recordings have continued to appear, and this recording and a companion (Vol. 1) with the other two so-called Lutheran masses are especially welcome in that these short mass settings ("Kyrie" and "Gloria" only) are not terribly often recorded. There are recent recordings by the Sixteen under Harry Christophers and by Cantus Cölln under Konrad Jünghänel, but Suzuki's pair, with his trademark mixture of precision and sublime warmth and his superb handling of soloists, is going to be difficult to beat. Either Suzuki release is worthwhile, but if you're buying only one this may be preferable: it includes a genuine rarity, a Mass in A minor (of similar configuration) by Marco Gioseppe Peranda (1625-1675).
