The concerts were held mostly in German churches, some with a direct connection to Bach, and they matched as closely as possible the point in the liturgical year for which the cantatas performed were written. This added a layer of meaning missing from the vast majority of recordings in which cantatas for different dates are mixed and the listener experiences the ways in which Bach responded to the idea of a certain feast day. On top of this are two more layers. Where there are multiple cantatas for the same day, as on this two-disc set, you can ponder the question of how Bach's theology changed over time.
