Son enseigne ne trompait pas: Au Rendez-vous des Mariniers ...Au 33, quai d'Anjou, s'y donnerent rendez-vous, de 1904 a 1953, les habitants du quartier, les patrons des peniches amarrees sur les berges et les blanchisseuses des bateaux-lavoirs tout proches...Nombre d'ecrivains et d'artistes y trouverent aussi refuge et s'en firent souvent l'echo dans leurs oeuvres - de Jean de la Ville de Mirmont a Picasso, de John Dos Passos a Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, d'Hemingway a Aragon, de Simenon a Blaise Cendrars, etc. Et c'est encore la que dinerent, un soir de mars 1933, Francois Mauriac et Louis-Ferdinand Celine - une rencontre entre deux romanciers que tout opposait !Frederic Vitoux s'attarde en leur compagnie. Tout comme il fait revivre les trois proprietaires successifs de l'etablissement, dont le destin n'est pas sans resonances avec celui de sa propre famille installee, a la meme epoque, a l'autre bout du quai, et ou il continue d'habiter. Au Rendez-vous des Mariniers est une promenade chaleureuse, insolite et fragmentee dans l'histoire litteraire de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle et dans celle de l'ile Saint-Louis, pour ne pas dire de la France tout court. Peut-etre, a la reflexion, ne se souvient-on jamais mieux que de ce que l'on n'a pas vecu. Ce sont ces souvenirs-la, indirects, qui sont les plus formateurs - et, qui sait, les plus impudiques. Ne en 1944, Frederic Vitoux est romancier, essayiste. Il a recemment publie, aux Editions Fayard, Clarisse , Grand Hotel Nelson , Jours inquiets dans l'Ile-Saint-Louis , Voir Manet , Les Desengages , et, en coedition avec les Editions Plon, Le Dictionnaire amoureux des chats .
