Atheists beware of good information
David Bentley Hart has produced a superb understanding for us of the history of the Church in contrast to the tawdry stale complaints by people, both atheists and other detractors. Hart is not a Catholic but he is tired of the charges constantly and improperly leveled at the Church. You all know the type: Spanish Inquisition, Crusades, Knights of whatever, battles, Galileo,?
Hart actually did research!!! He includes his sources, puts events in context, shows the positives and negatives with an even hand, acknowledges the humanness of decisions, discusses both the holy and unholy. All in all, he gives us a wonderful course in history that is balanced instead of accusatory, informed instead of polemical, and understanding instead of having an ax to grind.
Hart points to the source of many negative attitudes about the Church so you can re-evaluate them yourself instead of merely passing on ?common knowledge.?
Well written. Well documented. Make it well received. It really is worth the read if you want to understand the history of events instead of succumbing to the same old clichés and prejudices.
This book is excellent for members of the Church to understand better the complaints by others, for believers in other religious traditions to challenge their hand-me-down slogans against the Church and especially for non-believers who complain about the Church because they want to attempt to destroy faith in God.
