Small owner label on front pastedown, boards slightly bowed with a tiny tear at the crown, very good or better. Briefly Inscribed by Smith on the title page. Captain von Muenchhausen had been appointed aide-de-camp to William Howe to facilitate communication between the English-speaking Howe and General Leopold von Heister, the Hessian commander who spoke German and French. The captain kept a daily record of military activities from 1776-1778.
