Seller's Description:
Good with no dust jacket. Cxvi, 271 pp. A tall quarto. Large paper copy with the magnificent printing and typeface of Giambattista Bodoni. A modern rebinding with black cloth spine and rich blue and gold marbled paper covers, renewed endpapers. Old blue cloth label laid down. Top edge gilt, other edges rough cut. Title page has old institutional stamp, one page has an old clean 1" tear in the margin, some very occasional light foxing, but the paper quality is wonderful. Based on the 16th century Latin translation by Theodor Poelman. Boethius was a great Roman philosopher whose magnum opus was "On the Consolation of Philosophy." It was written as he was imprisoned under sentence of death by the Roman emperor: a calm exposition of Roman philosophy at its best; and a model for later medieval philosophers, the most widely read book in medieval Europe after the Bible. The esteemed Bodoni edition in a handsome modern binding. Brooks 724.; 4to 11"-13" tall; 271 pages.
