I read the First Edition of Ancient Egypt: Anatomy of a Civilization many years ago, and when I learned it had been updated, knew I had to read the revised version. As stated on the cover, it identifies "what gave ancient Egypt its distinctive and enduring characteristics, ranging across material culture, the mindset of its people, and social and economic factors." It brings the ancient society to life in a way no other book I've read does. It avoids the trite "Hollywood" outlook on ancient Egypt, and focuses on the people as they went about their daily lives. It is well written by an Egyptologist who knows how to make the subject not only interesting, but thought provoking.
