Not illustrated. 1870 Excerpt: ...vacant; it is the mortuary chapel of the Selbys of Biddlestone Hall. There is a bell-cot on the west gable, and the rest are surmounted by floriated crosses. The entrance is at the west end of the south aisle, and there is a priest's door in the same side of the chancel. The site has a steep slope, which admits of an ascent of ten steps to the chancel, and three more to the sacrarium. This was originally a Norman edifice. The chancel arch, the western portion of the masonry on both sides of the chancel, and one small window in it, bear testimony to the fact. In the Early English period the chancel was extended; north and south aisles and the transept thrown out, and the west end of the nave strengthened by buttresses. In the Decorated period a larger window was inserted in the south side of the chanceL Then came the terribly prosaic handling of the last century, which resulted, in the course of a hundred winters, in the condition of the edifice described by Mr. Procter. The restoration of 1851 was made by the architect who presided over that of Holystone church. The edifice is now in beautiful order. There are two massive altar tombs in the Clenncll aisle. On one of them is inscribed: Here lies the Body of Thos. Clennell of Clennell in the parish of Allonton and County of Northumberland Esq., who departed this life ye 18 of Jany Ano Do 170J aged 79. Also John Clennell of West Lilburn and county aforesaid Esqrc., Brother to ye above said Tho. Clenncll. Departed this hie ye 29 May Ano Do 1713 The other records the burial of Luke Clennell, Esq., son of the John Clennell mentioned above, in 1745; and of his widow, Sarah, the daughter of Wilfrid Lawson, Esq., in 1752.
