The year is 1815, Schubert's 18th, which means a lot of love songs and a lot of drinking songs, several romances, and -- given that 1815 was the last year of the Napoleonic Wars -- a couple of martial songs. There are seven singers, some already well known when the recording was made in 1993 and some who would become well known in the years to come. And, of course, the singers are blessed by Johnson's superbly sympathetic accompaniments as the disc is graced by his extraordinarily well-written program notes. As with any Lieder recital, however, the success of this 1816 Schubertiad rests with the singers and Johnson has once again engaged singers well suited for their material.
