I have always wondered how one would translate "Alice" as there are so many puns, so many plays on words, which I considered to be untranslatable, but I knew it had been done. If you are curious, too, this book has the answers.

A brief but facinating book.
This books recounts the efforts gone through by Charles Dodgeson to bring about the earliest versions and translations of his now classic story. There is also a facinating comparison study of several translations focusing on a 'Mad Tea-Party' extract showing how different languages handled the puns and nursary rhyme references.
The book is not very long, but there is plenty of interest there and the narrative is fresh and engaging.
The list of translations given towards the end of the book is still impressive today dispite number of translations doubling since publication.
However it's the historical story and translation challanges that make this a facinating read for any Carrollonian.
