Maar ook in het oerwoud bleef hij Bach spelen, bestudeerde Kant, Nietzsche en Goethe en schreef een heel oeuvre bij elkaar. Zijn studies over Jezus en Paulus zijn grensverleggend geweest. Vandaag krijgt ook zijn radicale ecologische ethiek van 'eerbied voor het leven' een profetische betekenis. Dit boek is de vrucht van een studiedag in Leuven, vijftig jaar na de dood van Schweitzer (1875-1965). Niet alleen deskundige bijdragen over zijn spirituele erfenis kwamen er aan bod maar ook getuigenissen van mensen voor wie Schweitzer een 'heldere bron' van inspiratie was en blijft.
