Elizabeth Taylor writes avoiding preciosity on the whole, but lacks wit and incisiveness. The plot in this below-par work has a predictable symmetry, though the minor strands, concerning an aging woman-artist and a married couple with a new-born child, meander and peter out. The main fault lies in the account of the male lead, a war-damaged womaniser, who, it turns out, had murdered a previous girl-friend and finally commits suicide when the heroine, the rather waspish Camilla, once again turns him down. His depressed state of mind is hardly convincingly conveyed. A comparison with Septimus Warren Smith in Virginia Woolf's "Mrs Dalloway" immediately reminds us what can be achieved in this line. Taylor leaves us here with a sense of vague gloom; much of what goes to make it up is just flaccid.
