Oscar Straus was Secretary of Commerce and Labor during Theodore Roosevelt's administration, and had dealings with all presidents from Cleveland to Harding. His public career of forty years involved him in many significant developments, including the Spanish-American War and imperialism, the growth of corporations and of labor unions, the Progressive movement, World War I, and the Paris peace conference. Straus brought to his public service a strong commitment to the precepts of reform Judaism. Straus broke from the Democratic Party and joined the Republicans because of his personal contact with Theodore Roosevelt andhis approval of the President's conduct of domestic affairs and humanitarian diplomacy.
