The writing by Charles Johnston is engaging, and the illustrations, many of them archtectural images, are beautifully chosen to give a real sense of Haydn's surroundings. As with any artificially generated compilation, the musical contents are something of a mixed bag, but this two-disc set has the virtue of being state-of-the-art: many of the individual recordings had not yet been released when this album appeared. As a collection of recordings showing new musical thinking about Haydn it works quite well, with vivid natural brasses in the Summer section of Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten and several fortepiano performances, including a fine reading of the Keyboard Concerto in D major, Hob. 18/11, by...
