Excerpt from Descriptive and Historical Account of Hydraulic and Other Machines for Raising Water, Vol. 1 of 5: Ancient and Modern; With Observations on Various Subjects Though we do not hear so much now, as formerly, of unsuccessful projectors ending their troubles with a razor, a rope, or suffocation by water, nor of others expiring from excess of joy at imaginary success, like a watchmaker of Paris, there are hundreds, if not thousands, wearing themselves away in the pursuit of mechanical fallacies, and the revival of obsolete devices, for lack of knowing what has been done, and what is impossible to be done.
