2000 Years With... marked the debut recording of "2000 Year Old Man," the now legendary comedy routine by Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks about a caveman frozen in time and defrosted years later to describe a world eerily similar to the modern one (culturally if not technologically). The bit became an instant classic and was reprised on many later LPs and TV appearances. There's plenty else on this album, though, that is at least as funny. "The Astronaught" posits that all of the men qualified to go into space are so homely that the "official" astronauts are really male models, while in "The Peruvian" a supposed Peruvian Indian knows a suspiciously large amount of German military history of WWII. As the liner notes by Steve Allen explain, the bits are skeletal outlines completely filed in by Brooks and Reiner's improvisation, which makes the quickness and flow even more impressive. Some of the routines, as can be expected, drag on a bit, and some of the humor might sound dated (though not offensively so), but for the most part, even when tackling occasionally hackneyed topics as psychiatry, Reiner and Brooks find enough fresh humor and are so skilled at improvising that even those segments are never dull or tiresome, and always delivered with enough knowledge of the subject to be intelligent. 2000 Years With... is a must for comedy fans. ~ Victor W.
