Artistic director Michael Jaffee and the Waverly Concort have assembled a recording that captures the listener's historic imagination. It is not delicate or cerebral music; this is rousing material, assembled with scholastic research and performed on period instruments. The result is the opposite of stuffy; even those with no interest in serious music or history will find it impossible to eschew this 1992 disc. The singing is excellent, smoothly emotive and pregnant with an atmosphere of the past. Part of the recording's success is that there is nothing falsely august about the performing.
